Soil nail is a way to hold soil, trenches, gables, etc. In the soil anchoring method, the soil is reinforced with nails with a diameter of 28 to 40 mm. The approximate distance of the spikes is about 2m and the angle of the spikes relative to the horizon is about 10 to 20 degrees. Soil nailing operations are typically performed as a top-down construction on a sloping or vertical surface. Soil nails are placed in drilled holes inside the soil wall and filled with cement mortar to transmit force between the soiland the foundation and prevent corrosion of the foundation. The nailed wall creates a reinforcement that holds the soil behind it.

Soil nailing is an economical and relatively new method for stabilizing slopes, slopes, ditches adjacent to roads and widening roads, digging near structures, strengthening old retaining structures, increasing bearing capacity, limit deformation with minimal intervention, etc

History of  soil nail method

The ground anchoring method was first used around the 1960s by Austrian engineers to stabilize rock slopes in tunnels and has been popular in Europe since the 1970s. Austrian engineers have drill several boreholes in the rock arch and rock wall of the tunnel, and place soil nails inside the borehole, inject cement grout into the borehole, and trap the nail heads in the tunnel environment with mesh and shotcrete. German and French engineers used the Austrian stone nailing method for sloped roofs and earthen walls. They generalized the use of soil nailing technology in tunnels to stabilize excavated slopes, soil walls and bridge abutments.

Functions  of soil nail technique

The main function of soil nails in the soil nailing method is tensile, and slight bending and shearing performance can be attributed to them. Nails have the effect of stabilizing the wall with the following two functions:

  • Increased shear strength of sliding surface in frictional soil due to increased vertical force.
  • Reduces sliding surface thrust in friction and cohesive soils.

Technical construction of soil foundation

The proposed foundation method includes several main stages carried out according to soil conditions etc. according to one of the following methods:

  • First soil foundation technique:
  • Excavation under the first foundation (cross-section excavation)
  • Shotcrete with a layer of reinforcing steel mesh (mesh) and drainage installed
  • drill boreholes
  • Install reinforced foundations
  • spraying cement mortar
  • Install the plate and nuts
  • Second soil nail technical method:
  • Excavation under the first foundation (cross-section excavation)
  • drill boreholes
  • Install reinforced foundations
  • slurry spray cement
  • Shotcrete with a layer of reinforcing steel mesh (mesh) and drainage installed
  • Install the plate and nuts
